Precor 9.3x series (9.31, 9.33, 9.35)

by Al
(Florida)

Gotta agree with "Dave". I was a service tech for Precor for 6 years out of Florida and we repaired a ton of Precor treadmills all for issues that were design and research related.

I'm not if the fitness field anymore, but have a Pacemaster at home.

NO problems with Precor 9.41S - works great!!
by: Anonymous

My dad has had the Precor 9.41S since 1988-1990 (it is now 2010) and between him, my sister and me it was used anywhere almost daily (sometimes 1-2 times/day, sometimes none). We ran and walked on it and it is still working. It's a workhorse and my dad did not have any repair issues.

Not impressed!
by: Sanjey P.

My Precor 9.35 failed after 9 months of use. The repair guys came and told me it had to have a bunch of parts replaced under warranty. They practically rebuilt my treadmill. I was not impressed after spending over $4k for a home treadmill. I definitely expected better!

PreCor - all models

by Doug
(Frederick, MD)

PreCor's are set with a small but noticeable incline. There are some who believe you can't get a "street" workout with a treadmill with a completely zero incline. So what? If I wanted a street workout I'd be on the street. The incline that is preset (even though the incline on the machine reads zero) is enough to really bother my knees.

Precor 9.27 (2008)

I had a similar negative experience with the Precor 9.27. The belt slipped on multiple occasions and it made a noise that sounded like metal scraping on metal. I was completely disappointed with this treadmill and view it as a complete waste of money.

Precor treadmills - all models - truly garbage.

by David
(Texas)

I've been a certified Precor service tech for about 9 years now. Our company has made thousands of dollars off repairing their treadmills and ellipticals. They are just like Mercedes. They cost a lot and break down a lot. They generally put out their products without proper testing, as a result, the machines keep breaking down and have to keep getting upgrades.

Luckily, if the repair falls under the "upgrade category" you might be lucky and won't have to pay for the repair, except having your time wasted.

We all think they're over priced, and you're really paying for the long parts warranty. Even the Chinese made treadmills and ellipticals are better and cheaper than Precor these days.

Thank you for keeping us employed Precor. Please continue to design crappy over priced machines and please don't test them properly like your competitors.

On a positive note, they are good while they work.

Loved my Precor for 30 years
by: Kathy

I have to speak out because of all the negative comments. My husband bought me a Precor top of the line and paid $4500 in 1988. sorry do not know the model#.

I used it running and inclined almost daily for the first 20 years and he used it frequently for most of that time.

The last 10 years we used it periodically. We NEVER had a maintenance issue with it. It always worked perfect.

We recently moved finally had no room to put it in not wanting to keep it in the garage and against my wishes my husband gave it away!!

At age 77 years I am now looking for another Precor. OH, and we also drive Mercedes and have never had serious break down costs with them over the last 20+ years either. one I drove for 230,000 miles.

Perhaps those people that are complaining do not know how to maintain their items. The Precor needs dusting and keeping clean.

Precor is Junk
by: James

I bought my Precor 9.35 in 2011 and had nothing but problems with it.

In addition, Precor knew I had all these problems mostly error 27 however now I'm getting an error 22.

They have no interest in helping solve the problem only interest they have is sending the tech out at 150 dollars a whack to do nothing but look at the machine and observe the error.

I would never recommend Precor nor would I ever buy one again.

A person would think these errors would be easily fixed however 7 years later I'm still having issues.

===================admin========

Hi James,

sorry to hear your frustrations with Precor. Its troubling that a company will not see the importance of standing by its products, or see the need of building a loyal customer base.

Or a Landice L7 for full price. Haven't bought a treadmill in forever so been probably overthinking this but want to be sure it lasts for a long time.

Thanks for any advice!

So, you who use 'em, love 'em; 2 techs hate them!?
by: Electronics Tech/Mech.

Egads, I was a Technician on extremely complicated military owned Boeing Aircraft, and Satellite communications equipment, over 20 years, and fixed everything that broke, from the field washing machines to satellite gear, and, on retirement, became an R&D designer, plus the Field Engineer, on high tech. machines.

Some days I loved my military career, other days, very rarely, wished it away! Such is the life of a tech. We live in the trenches, and are fish out of water in most other situations. Same in the civilian world. Guys N Gals "in the trenches" have a tendency to complain too much. But, without the machines, we have no jobs! DUH!!!

Making my own machine lathes, milling machines, specialty sanders and grinders using treadmill motors with variable speed controls is great! Online sales of fully operational used quality tread mills for $10 to $100 for an entire quality machine for parts is a win! Some even get diverted into our home gym, when our War Dept. sees 'em!

This is one of the worst articles (most likely fake) I've seen in a long time. Wether this is a different fitness equipment company trying to compete this is all out ridiculous. Just proves this is a BS article by the content through the website "Featured treadmills" which features some of the worst equipment on the market.

I have serviced and sold Precor product for years now and its still the high-end gold-standard it is made to be. We sell all products and big names and Precor is still our most sold.

Very loyal company when it comes to warranty also.

As you can figure, I am paying a pretty penny and want to make sure that I get my money's worth.

I am very excited to purchase based on reviews I have read here. I do need to know how to check the mileage and hours used.

Anybody?

Dubious Precor Quality
by: Doug Talbott

My wife and I purchased a Precor 9.27 as everyone raved about the quality. The unit was built in 2008 and had 30 miles on it when I purchased it a few years ago.

My wife (110 pounds) and I (190 pounds) run the machine during the winter months most days and the unit now has 750 miles on it. The deck has cracked and needs to be replaced. They recommend the belt be replaced at the same time for a total spend of about $1250 CDN.

Precor won't honour the 10 year warranty on parts since we purchased it used. Odd how most car companies honour a warranty regardless of who owns the car.

My advice. Do not buy Precor.

Precor 9.2 Treadmill -
by: Steve B

I've had my Precor 9.2 treadmill for approximately 23 years now and I have run and walked over 15 thousand miles on it and have never had a problem with it; with one recent exception.

I left it activated for several days without shutting it off and I got an "power board error" message.

After shutting it off for awhile it powered up okay. I got my moneys worth out of it.

Precor very good to better
by: cwesleyg

I was a Precor FAST technician back in the 1990's. Precor makes a very solid machine.

Most of the problems we saw were owner errors.

- Poorly adjusting belts,
- lubricating which should never have been done,
- letting them get overly dirty,
- bad power or inadequate circuit (20 amp required) to name a few.

Crashing belts and destroying them was common. Overtightening running belt would destroy the bearings in the rollers, or at least make them tick.

There were better treadmills, but Precor was always a opt seller and performer. The commercial ones were very solid.

I really like later Aerobics Pacemaster from that era, and Spirit was very durable.

Trotter was the premium machine of the 90's. I think Trotter was bought out by Cybex a while after they had to recall all of their own factory made units.

Never had a problem till now and it's my fault
by: Anonymous

In defense of my Precor treadmill...I've had a Precor 9.2S Treadmill since my separation in 1996 (I bought it for myself on Valentine's Day for my "heart."

Anyway, over the years I have used it a lot and put many miles on it.

I have never had a problem. I have not even had to adjust the belt.

It was the most reliable machine until I had new carpet installed and put it out in my garage in April.

My girlfriend was interested in it as I had gotten an elliptical and she came to look at it last night.

I had it partially covered but it must have gotten bumped or something leaned against it (the motor cover was not on it as it had cracked in the dry AZ climate and shattered when we tried to glue it, thus the fan motor blades were flapping against the side and the pulley motor was squealing.

I am not a tech and not mechanical.

I tried to find parts online, but I am afraid I couldn't find the one and the other was $50.

She only offered $100 for the treadmill.

So I think it is time to give it up.

I did get my use out of it and it was a wonderful machine.

DEFECTIVE ROLLERS ON PRECOR
by: EILEEN D.

I purchased a precor 9.33 November 2001.

I purchased a 5 year warranty and had work done under the warranty.

In 2009 it cost me 744.00 to replace the motor.

October 2013 had a precor technician come out the problem is the rollers and belt needs change (after 5 minutes the treadmill smells like rubber burning).

Tech said Precor has been changing there rollers and belts (they have been having problem with there rollers).

Precor knew there was a problem with there rollers and have been changing then free of charge (that is what the technician told me).

But when he called precord they said I will have to pay 50% of the parts cost.

Another dissatisfied Precor customer!
by: Anonymous

I must agree with the "tech."

My first Precor treadmill, model 9.2s, set me back over a thousand dollars in repairs during the 8 years it lasted.

Then I was dumb enough to buy another Precor (got talked into by the salesman who promised me they were a lot better than before).

This one was Model 9.33.

It felt good but after about two years it started to act-up and had to have a whole bunch of parts replaced.

Then two more years and the motor and a circuit board had to be replaced.

So much for better quality. I think not.

I switched to Pacemaster 2 years ago, its not as sturdy, then again it doesn't weigh a ton like the Precor.

But the running feel is very comfortable and it was about $1500 less.

Its now just over two years and not a single problem.

Disgruntled Ex-Employee Perhaps?
by: Anonymous

I have a few problems with the broad statements posted by both parties.

First and foremost, the Precor 9.31 treadmill was just named "Best" in Consumer Reports, a non-biased publication.

Hardly "truly garbage" as stated in the original post.

Secondly, if you keep an eye on the industry and have a knowledge of sales vs. warranty you would undoubtedly know that Precor consistently runs at around 3% warranty vs. sales, which translated means that for every 100 units sold, three get some sort of claim placed against them which is much lower than, lets say, Natilus which is running around 17%.

Finally, using Mercedes as a comparison is reaching quite a bit, because Damlier Benz was consistently at the top of JD Powers survey in both initial and long term reliability up until the point of the ill fated merger with Chrysler, which unfairly allowed Chryslers poor quality to drag Mercedes numbers down.

Since the sale of Chrysler, Mercedes is not only now above the industry standard, but climbing back into the top yearly.

As for expense, Mercedes and Precor, use higher quality materials in manufacturing and therefore cost more.

Precor 9.27 (2008)

by Jeff B.
(Canada)

It took almost 4 months and 4 repair visits to get this brand new (not a demo) treadmill to work properly. There were multiple problems. The first was that it squeaked very loudly, the repairman had to disassemble the running track twice to find the problem. It was a huge internal dent from some douche bag at the factory dropping it and covering up the accident. Another problem is the running track belt which always slips while running. It's been tightened 4 times in four months. The repairman says the 2008 model uses a different material/coating. It still slips after tightening I've now been shown how to do it myself because it needs it every week. Last but not least, the display units has been replaced twice! Both had different problems.

I bought this treadmill because I was buying Precor quality. Seems like they've cashed in on their good name and started charging big money for junk.

Refurbished Precor 956i

Got a refurbished precor with a TV because I thought refurbished meant "like new". Heart rate did not work, TV did not work. Had exposed wires under console.

Returned the thing. Then bought a used one. Serial number was missing. This was too fishy.

I said screw it in trying to save money and bought a new Matrix.
