How Much Of Your Weight Is Fat?
This Body Fat Calculator Will Tell You
Originally developed by the YMCA, you can estimate your body fat percentage using this calculator. Only a tape measure is needed. Taking your waist measurement and combining it with your weight and gender will result in your estimated body fat percentage.
The calculator also produces your fat mass, lean mass, and a rating of your fitness level.
Having an accurate measure of your body fat percentage is an important part of your overall health assessment. Your body composition is a much more important measure than weight.
Body Composition is the term used to describe the different components that, when taken together, make up a person's body weight. That includes lean tissue (muscle, bone, and organs) and fat. The lean tissue is metabolically active, while fat is not.
Your weight as measured on a scale only gives you limited information. A heavily muscled individual will appear to be overweight if you are going by scale weight only.
Also, two people at the same height and same weight could appear completely different from each other because they have a different body composition.
The ideal body fat percentage varies considerably for men and women, and by age. A healthy adult male's body should have between 13 and 17 percent fat.
A healthy female's body should be composed of between 20 and 25 percent fat. Athletes will have a much lower body fat levels, with Men in the 5-12% range, Women in the 13-19% range.
